"I am here to contribute, along with my team-mates and the fans, so that AEK Athens can achieve their goals," said the 29-year-old after being unveiled as the club's latest recruit. Kyrgiakos made his name at Panathinaikos FC, but missed most of their double-winning season as well as UEFA EURO 2004™ after suffering knee ligament damage against Rangers FC. He subsequently joined the Scottish club, initially on loan, before moving to Frankfurt where he was a regular over two seasons.
EURO contribution
Kyrgiakos was on the field for every minute of the UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying campaign and also played all three matches of the finals. He joins former Panathinaikos team-mate Angelos Basinas, signed on Thursday, at AEK. The Athenians meet AC Omonia in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup on 14 and 28 August before they get their Super League campaign under way against the Greens three days later.
