Panathinaikos take on Porto's Postiga

The Portugal forward Hélder Postiga has switched to Panathinaikos FC on a six-month loan from FC Porto, with the possibility of a permanent move this summer.

Portugal striker Hélder Postiga has joined Panathinaikos FC on an initial six-month loan from FC Porto.

Permanent option
The 25-year-old arrives in Athens in time for Wednesday's Greek Cup derby at Olympiacos CFP, and with Panathinaikos having the option of signing him outright in the summer.

Portuguese connection
Postiga, whose coach at Panathinaikos will be his compatriot, the ex-Sporting Clube de Portugal boss José Peseiro, said: "I have joined a famous European club who are in the habit of winning trophies. The fact Panathinaikos have a Portuguese coach is a plus for me, but not the only reason I accepted their offer. I will also get the opportunity to challenge for the Greek championship, the cup and the UEFA Cup."

Porto stalwart
The forward has been limited to just two starts in the Liga, and four substitute appearances, this term. He has spent his entire career at Porto with the exception of a season, 2003/04, with Tottenham Hotspur FC in England, and a loan spell at AS Saint-Etienne in France during the 2005/06 campaign. Panathinaikos will play Rangers FC in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 next month. They drew 1-1 in a Super League derby at Olympiacos on Sunday and occupy third place in the title race.
