Ajax follow French pair out of Europe

FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 1-1 Aberdeen FC (agg: 1-1, Aberdeen win on away goals) 
Aberdeen continued Scotland's fine week in European competition as they held on to knock out Dnipro. The visitors were held 0-0 at home a fortnight ago but midway through the first half claimed a crucial away goal as Richard Foster's perfect cross was headed in by Darren Mackie. Andriy Vorobey gave Dnipro hope with 12 minutes left but although Konstyantyn Kravchenko hit the bar, they could not force another goal against the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Super Cup winners.

FC Basel 1893 6-0 FK Sarajevo (agg: 8-1)
After edging the away leg 2-1, Basel made easier work of Sarajevo who were completely overrun at St. Jakob-Park. Midfielder Carlitos gave the hosts a comfortable early cushion with two goals in as many minutes. Switzerland striker Marco Streller headed in the third (19) before making it 4-0 ten minutes later. Benjamin Huggel added a fifth 15 minutes from time and Felipe Caicedo capped the win with an added-time sixth as Basel ensured a third consecutive UEFA Cup group phase qualification.

AFC Ajax 2-3 NK Dinamo Zagreb (agg: 3-3, Dinamo win on away goals)
Marijo Mandžukić was the hero for Dinamo as Ajax were unravelled in extra time of a five-goal thriller in Amsterdam. The visitors' attacking intent was rewarded when Mandžukić was brought down in the area by Gregory van der Wiel and Luka Modrić (34) levelled the aggregate score from the spot. The match went to extra time whereupon Mandžukić scored twice in three minutes (94 & 96). Klaas Jan Huntelaar's also struck two goals (101, 120) but they came too late to save Henk ten Cate's side.

FC BATE Borisov 0-2 Villarreal CF (agg: 1-6)
Villarreal FC completed a routine progression with a 2-0 away victory in Minsk. BATE welcomed three Belarus internationals back into their squad following suspension but that did not stop Villarreal from scoring on 24 minutes through Cani from. The home team replied with a couple of dangerous free-kicks before Santiago Cazorla fed Ángel López to make it 2-0 on 78 minutes.

Panionios NFC 0-1 FC Sochaux-Montbéliard (agg: 2-1)
Panionios were beaten on the night but advanced to the group stage for only the second time in their history thanks to their 2-0 victory in France two weeks ago. Visitors Sochaux hit the bar early on through a Moumouni Dagano header and scored the only goal nine minutes into the second half when Bennard Kumordzi put the ball in his own net when trying to clear. It was not enough, however, as the Greek side held on for an aggregate win.

R. Standard de Liège 1-1 FC Zenit St. Petersburg (agg: 1-4)
The Russian side eased through to the group stage as their 3-0 first-leg lead proved too much for Standard. Oguchi Onyewu raised hopes among the home crowd when he headed in Salim Toema's corner in the 36th minute, but then swiftly dashed them as he was dismissed following a second yellow card four minutes later. The Belgian side fought on, and were in contention until Pavel Pogrebnyak made it 1-1 late on though, like Onyewu, he then saw red.

FC København 2-1 RC Lens (agg: 3-2 aet)
Veteran winger Jesper Grønkjær kept his cool to convert an extra-time penalty as the ten-man home team earned an impressive win. Yet for much of the game the night had seemed to be Lens' as they led through Eric Carrière's early strike until 14 minutes from time when Marcus Allbäck equalised. With the rain falling hard the match drifted into extra time and though captain Michael Gravgaard was sent off three minutes in, with eight minutes left Libor Sionko was brought down and Grønkjær made no mistake from the spot.

Galatasaray SK 5-1 FC Sion (agg: 7-4)
Galatasaray's dream of adding another UEFA Cup win to their 2000 success remains alive after they overturned a 3-2 first-leg deficit against Swiss side Sion with aplomb. Lincoln set up Ümit Karan on 22 minutes and the same player doubled the lead seven minutes later after a Hakan Şükür flick on. Lincoln's deflected shot added to the advantage before the break and Arda Turan's stylish goal increased the cushion midway through the second period. Although Obinna Nwaneri pulled one back in stoppage time, Ismael Bouzid had the final word with a well-taken volley.

FC Salzburg 1-0 AEK Athens FC (agg: 1-3)
A single goal proved enough for Salzburg to win on the night in Austria against AEK, but it was the Greek visitors who were celebrating an aggregate victory. Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Giovanni Trapattoni's side always had an uphill task but took the lead on 20 minutes through Vratislav Lokvenc. The home side continued to boss the play but were unable to get any further breakthroughs, failing to convert a number of chances as AEK held on.

AIK Solna 0-1 Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC (agg: 0-1)
Reuven Oved's 63rd-minute goal secured Hapoel's second successive appearance in the group stage. Oved, who joined Hapoel in the summer from Bnei Yehuda Tel-Aviv FC, curled in a free-kick for his first European goal and that proved enough to eliminate Sweden's AIK. Hapoel coach Guy Luzon, like his club, will be in the group stage for the second time having previously qualified with Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC.

Club Brugge KV 1-2 SK Brann (agg: 2-2, Brann win on away goals) 
Two first-half goals did the damage as Brann got the better of ten-man Club Brugge in Belgium. The hosts were surprised on the counterattack when Martin Andresen's picked out Thorstein Helstad who beat Stijn Stijnen on 14 minutes and Erik Huseklepp then teed up Robbie Winters to double the visitors' lead (38). Brugge bounced back in the second half as Philippe Clement headed in Ivan Leko's corner (76) but with Jeroen Simaeys dismissed for a second booking Club Brugge were unable to claw their way back.
