Long-term contract
The 49-year-old, who was in charge at Real Zaragoza until the summer, has signed a contract until the end of the season with the option of a 12-month extension if Panathinaikos win the Greek title. Jasminko Velić, who has been caretaker coach since Hans Backe was sacked in mid-September, is to become general manager.

Muñoz, a former Spanish international and defender with Zaragoza, FC Barcelona, UC Sampdoria and Saint Mirren FC, became RCD Mallorca coach in 1995, winning promotion. After spells at Rayo Vallecano, CD Logroñés, UD Lleida and Villarreal CF, he took over at Zaragoza in 2004 and reached two Copa del Rey finals, defeating Real Madrid CF before losing to RCD Espanyol last term.

His new club trail Greek league leaders Olympiacos CFP by five points after six games and open their UEFA Cup Group G campaign behind closed doors at home against Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC next Thursday before facing FK Mladá Boleslav, AFC Rapid Bucuresti and Paris Saint-Germain FC.
