FC Rubin Kazan midfielder Carlos Eduardo is expected to be sidelined for four more months after learning he needs an operation on his troublesome knee.

The Brazilian international has played just six times in the Russian Premier-Liga since signing from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in August 2010, after seriously injuring his right knee. Doctors initially ruled out surgery, but the latest medical advice sought in Munich has recommended an operation, which could keep Eduardo out for the remainder of his side's UEFA Europa League campaign.

Eduardo started his career at Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense before spending three seasons in Germany, where he scored 18 goals in 80 league games for Hoffenheim. His impressive displays earned him six Brazil caps and a reported €20m move to Rubin, yet he has not appeared for the two-time Russian champions since facing FC Spartak Moskva in November 2010.

Rubin finished runners-up in UEFA Europa League Group A and host Olympiacos FC in the round of 32 on 16 February, before travelling to Greece for the return leg a week later. Kurban Berdyev's team lie fifth in the Premier-Liga, ten points adrift of pacesetters FC Zenit St Petersburg.
