Vaduz and Dinamo rise to the occasion

FC Vaduz prevailed against the odds, FC Dinamo Tbilisi turned the tables on Llanelli AFC, while the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round deciders proved to be plain sailing for Fulham FC and FC Salzburg.

Liechtenstein's only European contenders, Vaduz lost 2-0 at home against FK Vojvodina last week but turned the tie on its head in Novi Sad. Serbian defender Dušan Cvetinović put them ahead early on, and Moreno Merenda doubled the lead 12 minutes from time. Nemanja Čović's strike looked to have won the tie for Vojvodina, but Merenda struck again deep in added time, latching on to Diego Ciccone's free-kick to win it on away goals.

"It was obvious that our opponents didn't deliver 100% on the field," said Vaduz's Dutch coach Eric Orie. "We believed we could win as soon as the first goal went in. The thing I am most proud of is that our morale didn't collapse after the Vojvodina goal. Over the two games I think we deserved to go through. We always see hope in every game, and never back down."

Vaduz will meet Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC in the next phase, while FK Željezničar will be up against Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC after drawing 0-0 in Tiraspol to unseat last season's group stage contenders FC Sheriff on away goals. The same combination of a 1-1 draw away and a 0-0 at home saw FK Qarabağ edge out Faroese side EB/Streymur; the Azeri side's reward, a meeting with Club Brugge KV.

Željezničar's city rivals FK Sarajevo also had a great night, Nermin Haškić scoring twice against Sweden's Örebro SK to secure a 2-0 aggregate win and tee up a tie against AC Sparta Praha. However, Llanelli AFC will have no fond memories of their trip to Georgia; 2-1 up from their first leg against FC Dinamo Tbilisi, they lost 5-0 away to the side that lifted the 1980/81 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

Dinamo will visit KR Reykjavík next week, with the Icelandic side clinging on at MŠK Žilina, a 2-0 defeat not quite eclipsing a famous 3-0 home win in the first leg. However, Ferencvárosi TC could not keep their grip at Aalesunds BK. Having beaten their hosts 2-1 last week, they lost by the same margin over 90 minutes, with Sander Post's 119th-minute strike sending the Norwegian side through.

A 0-0 draw saw FC Salzburg plod on, having won the first leg of their tie against SK Liepājas Metalurgs 4-1 in Latvia, with 2009/10 finalists Fulham FC proceeding in more serene style, a 4-0 triumph in London giving them a 7-1 aggregate success against Crusaders FC.

However, there was a sting in the tail of the evening for Dundee United FC. After losing 1-0 in Poland, the Scottish side were 2-0 up against WKS Śląsk Wrocław within five minutes, and still 3-1 ahead by half-time. However, Sebastian Dudek struck on 74 minutes to pull it back to 3-2, with the 1986/87 UEFA Cup finalists eliminated on away goals.
