Club Atlético de Madrid have begun strengthening for their defence of the UEFA Europa League title by re-signing midfielder Mario Suárez from RCD Mallorca for a reported fee of €1.8m.
A lack of first-team opportunities prompted the 23-year-old to leave the Vicente Calderón on loan in the second half of 2006/07, the Madrid-born player first moving to Real Valladolid CF and then spending the following campaign at RC Celta de Vigo. In July 2008, Mallorca acquired Suárez on a four-year deal with Atletico reserving the right to buy him back within the first 24 months.
Suárez made 34 league appearances for Mallorca last term, 27 from the start, as Gregorio Manzano's team qualified for the UEFA Europa League by virtue of a fifth-place finish. He is Los Colchaneros's second acquisition of the summer following Fran Mérida's arrival on a free transfer from Arsenal FC last month.
