Dortmund beat Karpaty to set up Sevilla decider

Borussia Dortmund defeated FC Karpaty Lviv 3-0 to stay in contention in UEFA Europa League Group J.

Shinji Kagawa, Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski scored to give Jürgen Klopp's side all three points in a largely one-sided contest. But with Paris Saint-Germain FC now assured of progressing after defeating Sevilla FC 4-2, Dortmund can only follow them into the knockout stages by winning in Andalusia in two weeks' time.

Flying high in the Bundesliga, Dortmund immediately took the initiative and had already fashioned a couple of chances before opening the scoring after five minutes. Nuri Şahin curled in a cross from the right and Kagawa rose unmarked to nod in. Lewandowski almost doubled the lead soon after but Vitaliy Rudenko blocked his close-range effort, following it up by denying Jakub Błaszczykowski with a sliding tackle.

Karpaty briefly seemed to be edging their way back into the game, and just after the half-hour, an outswinging free-kick by playmaker Igor Khudobyak only just eluded a clutch of team-mates. Dortmund responded immediately, Kevin Grosskreutz lobbing Rudenko but missing the target by a whisker.

The hosts made a virtually identical start to the second half to take a two-goal advantage. Nuri again floated in a cross and this time it was defender Hummels who headed beyond Rudenko after 49 minutes. Kagawa's drive was deflected over and Mohamed Zidan went closer still with a low drive, although there was still time for a third as Lewandowski finished confidently from just inside the box shortly before time.

The defeat leaves Karpaty without any points after five matches, but Dortmund are very much alive and know exactly what they have to do in Seville to advance.
