Tiago ensures Atlético win in Rosenborg

Tiago's stunning winner six minutes from time gave Club Atlético de Madrid victory at Rosenborg BK against the run of play.

Sergio Agüero struck for the holders on four minutes but Rosenborg kept up the form that recently secured a second straight Norwegian title and equalised through Markus Henriksen not long after the break. It seemed Rosenborg would go on and win but Tiago had other ideas; Atlético are now three points clear of third-placed Aris Thessaloniki FC and will qualify if they defeat the Greek side on 1 December.

Atlético beat Rosenborg 3-0 a fortnight ago and could not have made a better start tonight. Raúl García looped the ball from right to left for Simão's centre to leave Agüero tapping into an unguarded net, adding to the goal he scored on Matchday 3. Immediately Rosenborg began to push and Rade Prica so nearly connected in a superb position while Steffen Iversen's header was not far away.

Tiago and Diego Costa both threatened for the visitors but most of the play was at the other end, Prica a particular menace. The half-time break did not slow Rosenborg's momentum and seven minutes into the second period it was 1-1, Iversen controlling a long ball and sending Henriksen clear to shoot through David de Gea's legs.

The Atlético goalkeeper made amends soon after to deny Iversen but Rosenborg continued to pile on the pressure. Then, out of nowhere Tiago dribbled past three players and produced a stunning long-range shot that gave Daniel Örlund no chance and Atlético the points. Rosenborg are now four adrift of Atlético and need to defeat leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen next time out to keep alive their slender hopes.
