Moldova signed off in Group E by recording their biggest competitive victory to leave San Marino without a single point or goal to show for their qualifying efforts.
San Marino went close to ending their goal drought when Matteo Vitaioli's effort was ruled out for offside, but that proved as close as the visitors would come. All the action was concentrated at the other end, instead, where Aldo Simoncini kept Moldova at bay for 30 minutes before being beaten by Denis Zmeu's header from a Victor Golovatenco cross.
A Simone Bacciocchi own goal shortly after the hour extended Moldova's lead, which increased further when Alexandru Suvorov tucked in Igor Bugaev's terrific pass. Substitute Igor Ţîgîrlaş then saw red six minutes after coming on, but fellow replacement Gheorghe Andronic had a more positive influence as he struck his team's record-breaking fourth three minutes from time.
