Rooney first England player to 50 goals

Almost 12 years to the day since he scored his first England goal, Wayne Rooney has become the first player from his nation to reach 50 senior international goals.

Three days after Wayne Rooney drew level with Sir Bobby Charlton as England's all-time leading marksman having registered his 49th goal for his country in the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E game in San Marino, the forward made the record his own by striking against Switzerland.

The Manchester United attacker's 84th-minute penalty at Wembley on Tuesday, following on from another spot kick in Serraville, came almost 12 years to the day since he opened his national-team account on his sixth England outing, a UEFA EURO 2004 qualifier against FYR Macedonia. With that effort in Skopje, Rooney had become his nation's youngest-ever scorer at 17 years and 317 days – a record that still stands.

The 29-year-old – who burst onto the scene at the 2004 finals in Portugal with four goals – has achieved his feat in 107 appearances, one more than Sir Bobby made during an England career that lasted from 1958 to 1970.

Wayne Rooney's reaction ...
It's a great feeling. I've been close to it obviously the last few England games and to finally do it, it's a dream come true and as you probably saw I was a bit emotional out there.

It's a huge honour I'm extremely proud of and happy it's done. Hopefully I'll kick on from here and concentrate now on hopefully achieving success in the future.
