EURO 2016 matchday one number crunching

Goals

• At 1.83 goals per game, the average is the lowest since 1968 when seven were scored in five matches for a mean of 1.40.

• If scoring continues at the current rate, despite the low average, there will be around 93 goals, ahead of the record of 85 from 2000 (in 31 rather than 51 matches).

• 16 of the 22 goals have been scored in second halves – the rate would be 2.67 goals per game if the first 45 minutes were as prolific, higher than any of the last three EUROs where the average was between 2.4 and 2.5 overall

• Three goals have been registered in second-half added time, but none after the 45th minute of any first half.

• Two of the four substitutes to score did so in the same match – Ondrej Duda of Slovakia and Hal Robson-Kanu of Wales.

• Just two of the 21 scorers so far have not got their maiden EURO goal – Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luka Modrić.

• Nani's opener against Iceland was the 600th UEFA EURO finals goal.

Passing

• Spain completed 632 passes against Czech Republic yet Switzerland have a higher completion rate at 92.2% with 510 reaching their destination from 553 attempts against Albania.

• Spain are out on their own with 67% possession against the Czechs.

Shooting

• Portugal mustered 27 shots against Iceland, nine more than any other team. Ten were on target and ten were blocked, both competition highs.

• Hannes Halldórsson's ten saves against Portugal were the highest of the championship so far by three.

• Croatia put 11 of their 18 attempts against Turkey off target.

Players

• Kolbeinn Sigthórsson has achieved the highest top speed in the tournament at 31.5kh/h (for comparison, Usain Bolt peaked at 44.6km/h in his 100m world record in 2009, but Sigthórsson covered about 100 times more ground against Portugal). Second and third on the speed table are two more Iceland players, Birkir Bjarnason and Birkir Sævarsson.

• Italy's Marco Parolo has run the furthest overall, 12,570m against Belgium.

• Dimitri Payet is the only player to manage both an assist and a goal – hence his position at the top of the Player Barometer.

• Hungary goalkeeper Gábor Király was the first 40-year-old to play in a UEFA EURO finals for men or women while the Italy side that faced Belgium had a record average age of 31 years 169 days.

Attendances

• 46,759 is on course to be the highest average attendance since the tournament's expansion to 16 teams in 1996 (the 1988 finals in West Germany averaged a record 56,656 per match for the 15 games)
