Germany have called up Jonathan Tah to replace Antonio Rüdiger, who has been ruled out of UEFA EURO 2016 after the Roma defender tore cruciate ligaments in his right knee.
The injury occurred in what was supposed to be a light training match in front of 2,000 fans after Germany arrived in their training base of Evian-les-Bains this evening. The 23-year-old had to be helped from the pitch and Germany's worst fears were confirmed by team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt.
Rüdiger had looked set to feature alongside Jérôme Boateng in Germany's central defence on Sunday for the Group C opener against Ukraine in Lille, with Mats Hummels, who is in the squad, already been ruled out for that match with torn calf muscle fibres.
Bayer Leverkusen's Tah made his senior debut for Germany in the 3-2 loss to England on 26 March. At 20, he will reduce the average age of the Germany squad to 25.81, younger than the previous lowest in France of 25.84 for England.
