England impress in France Wembley friendly win

Goals either side of half-time from Dele Alli, his first for his country, and captain Wayne Rooney, his 51st, gave England victory against UEFA EURO 2016 hosts France at Wembley.

France created the first chance of the evening, Yohan Cabaye shooting over from 20 metres before Anthony Martial's strike was dealt with by Joe Hart. England, however, were producing some enterprising interplay of their own, Harry Kane setting up Rooney for an effort that flew narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.

England's aim was more accurate six minutes before half-time, however, as they took the lead in stunning fashion. Alli won the ball just inside the half and collected a return pass from Rooney before firing into the top corner of the net with the help of a slight deflection off Laurent Koscielny.

The advantage was doubled early in the second period as Rooney volleyed Raheem Sterling's deep left-wing cross past Hugo Lloris. Though Paul Pogba lifted an attempt onto the roof of the net after a clever piece of skill, England were now in command.

Replacement goalkeeper Jack Butland did have to save from Martial at close range after the Manchester United forward latched onto another clever Pogba flick to preserve the hosts' two-goal cushion. Pogba had the evening's last real opening, slicing wide from range as Roy Hodgson's men held on for the victory.
