Ronaldo leads Madrid through with another landmark

Cristiano Ronaldo's hat-trick made it five goals in the tie and 100 for him in the UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid saw off Bayern München to reach a seventh straight semi-final.

Ronaldo hat-trick seals Madrid-Bayern clash

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 100 goals in the UEFA Champions League – and made it five goals in the tie – as Real Madrid overcame ten-man Bayern München in extra time to reach a record seventh successive semi-final.

Having got both Madrid goals in last week's first leg, Ronaldo cancelled out Robert Lewandowski's penalty and, after a Sergio Ramos own goal had forced extra time, he struck twice more in the additional 30 minutes to bring up the century. Substitute Marco Asensio skipped through to add a clinching fourth.

Ronaldo 'over the moon'

Bidding to become only the third team in UEFA Champions League history to win a tie having lost the home first leg, Bayern began purposefully. Thiago Alcántara's early shot was blocked by the sliding Marcelo; Arjen Robben dragged the rebound wide.

That set the tone for an open first half, with the better chances falling Madrid's way. After Manuel Neuer had parried Dani Carvajal's cross, Jérôme Boateng repelled Ramos's rebound on the line. Ronaldo was then denied by Neuer at his near post.

Marcelo had to head Robben's attempt off the line early in the second period, before the first goal came in the 53rd minute. Casemiro was adjudged to have tripped Robben; Lewandowski calmly placed the spot kick past Keylor Navas.

Casemiro made amends with 14 minutes left, centring for Ronaldo to nod in. Two minutes later, however, Bayern were back in front and the quarter-final was all square. When substitute Thomas Müller tried to chest a long ball towards Lewandowski, Ramos's interception only sent it bobbling inside Navas's post.

Both sides pressed for a winner, although Bayern's attacking impetus was checked as Arturo Vidal collected a second yellow card six minutes from the end of normal time. Neuer made fine stops from Ronaldo and Asensio early in extra time, but Madrid would not be resisted.

In the closing seconds of the first period, Ramos picked up possession midway through the Bayern half and was afforded time to pick out Ronaldo in space in the area; the finish was predictably unerring.

With Bayern depleted and committed to attack, gaps opened up for Madrid and in the 110th minute Marcelo drove through the heart of their defence before unselfishly presenting Ronaldo with a tap-in to complete his hat-trick and bring up 100 goals. Two minutes later, Asensio sealed victory with a fine solo strike.

Key player: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Just as in the Munich first leg, it was almost inevitable Ronaldo would be the Madrid hero tonight. His equaliser came at a time when Bayern were threatening to take the aggregate lead, before he wrapped up his treble and claimed his 100th UEFA Champions League goal to fire the Merenges into another semi-final.

Madrid's defensive travails
All eyes will rightly be on Ronaldo, but there will come a time when he needs those behind him to help out and keep out the opposition. While Madrid's striking ability is lethal, they have a leaky back line; they are yet to register a clean sheet in this season's competition. Having levelled on the night they just had to see the game out yet within two minutes Bayern scored again. If ultimately it did not cost them, the semi-final might be a different story.

Bayern suffer from fatigue
Eyebrows were raised when the team sheets came out and both Boateng and Mats Hummels were in Bayern's starting XI. The duo defended bravely, but it was always going to be difficult for them to play 120 minutes, and Real took advantage of their tiredness and the extra man to punish Bayern clinically.

Job done. Perhaps not in the manner they would have envisaged, having been at 1-1 with just over ten minutes left, but nevertheless Madrid are through to a seventh consecutive semi-final. The way this tournament brings out the best of them you would not bet against them becoming the first side to go on and retain the title in its current format.

Bayern looked nervous in the first half and lacked composure in the final third, yet Lewandowski's goal gave them real belief and they deserved to take the game to overtime. It was always going to be difficult to play with ten men, but Carlo Ancelotti can be pleased with his team's efforts.
