Third place on offer for Tottenham and CSKA

Both Tottenham Hotspur FC and PFC CSKA Moskva suffered disappointing matchday five results to end their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds and meet at Wembley with a ticket to the UEFA Europa League at stake.

• Tottenham lost 2-1 away to AS Monaco FC the same night as the Army Men could do no more than draw 1-1 at home against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. It left Spurs one point ahead of their Russian rivals, meaning they will move into the UEFA Europa League unless CSKA inflict a third Wembley defeat of this season's competition.

• When the teams met on matchday two in Moscow – their first competitive fixture – Heung-Min Son's late goal gave the visitors victory.

• Back among the European elite after an absence of five seasons, Tottenham began with a 2-1 defeat against Monaco at their adopted home, Wembley Stadium.

• In the double-header against Leverkusen Spurs drew 0-0 away and again failed to make home advantage count in the return, going down 1-0.

• Spurs won four of five home games en route to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League in 2015/16, going down 2-1 at White Hart Lane to Borussia Dortmund for a 5-1 aggregate defeat.

• The Russian champions recovered a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 at Leverkusen at the start of their tenth group stage campaign.

• On matchday three they drew 1-1 at home to Monaco while the away game brought a 3-0 defeat for Leonid Slutski's side.

• In their fourth successive group stage campaign, CSKA are aiming to improve on last season's performance when they finished bottom of Group B (W1 D1 L4).

• They have lost nine of their last 11 away games in the group stage of this competition, their solitary success coming in a 2-1 win at Manchester City FC on matchday four in 2014/15.

• The Army Men have lost on three of their seven visits to England, drawing three. Their overall record against Premier League opposition is W3 D5 L8.

• Bibras Natcho scored for FC Rubin Kazan when Spurs lost 1-0 there in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League group stage.

• Mauricio Pochettino won in Moscow as an RCD Espanyol player in a 1-0 UEFA Cup group stage victory over FC Lokomotiv Moskva in 2005/06.

• Slutski was coach of the Russia side who drew 1-1 with England at UEFA EURO 2016 thanks to Vasili Berezutski's added-time equaliser. Eric Dier had earlier scored a free-kick past Akinfeev.

Chapecoense commemoration
Teams taking part in all of the matchday six UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League matches will observe a minute's silence to pay respect to the victims of last week's air disaster involving the Chapecoense team and accompanying delegation. The Brazilian club lost most of their players and coaching staff in the accident, which occurred in Colombia, where Chapecoense were due to play the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atlético Nacional.

"European football is united in expressing its deepest sympathy to Chapecoense, the Brazilian Football Confederation [CBF], CONMEBOL and the families of all the victims," said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. "This tragedy has shaken the world of football, and we would like to send our support to all of those affected by it."
