Two of the great names of European football face off in Turin when Juventus host FC Bayern München in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.

• Twice champions of Europe, Juventus were runners-up last season, while Bayern won the last of their five titles in 2013 and were semi-finalists in 2014 and 2015.

• Juventus qualified for the last 16 as Group D runners-up and have a strong record at home in Europe. However, Group F winners Bayern will not be daunted – they are the only foreign team to have beaten the Bianconeri on Italian soil in the past decade.

• This first-leg match will provide Bayern pair Arturo Vidal and Kingsley Coman with the opportunity to return to their former club, while Juventus have a Bayern old boy in their ranks in Mario Mandžukić.

Previous meetings
• Bayern earned 2-0 home and away wins over Juventus in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

• After a 2-0 first-leg victory in Munich, Bayern became the first foreign team to win at the new Juventus Stadium when Mandžukić – now a Juve player – and Claudio Pizarro struck in the second leg for Jupp Heynckes' side, who went on to win the competition.

• The lineups in Turin on 10 April 2013 were:
Juventus: Buffon, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Pirlo, Padoin (Isla 69), Asamoah, Pogba, Marchisio (Giaccherini 79), Vučinić, Quagliarella (Matri 66).
Bayern: Neuer, Lahm, Van Buyten (Boateng 35), Dante, Alaba, Martínez, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Müller, Ribéry (Luiz Gustavo 80), Mandžukić (Pizarro 83).

• Bayern have won the clubs' last three encounters, including a 4-1 victory at Juventus in December 2009. Goalkeeper Hans-Jörg Butt (penalty), Ivica Olić, Mario Gomez and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk struck to secure a win that carried the Bavarian club into the last 16 at Juve's expense.

• Gianluigi Buffon and Claudio Marchisio played for Juventus in that 2009 encounter in Turin; Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber, Thomas Müller and substitute Arjen Robben represented Bayern.

• Juventus have won three of the sides' eight previous meetings and Bayern four. The Bianconeri last prevailed in this fixture in November 2005 when David Trezeguet scored both goals in a 2-1 home success in the group stage.
