Article body
Club Atlético de Madrid must achieve something they have managed only twice in UEFA competition to oust Bayer 04 Leverkusen from the UEFA Champions League round of 16 – win a tie after losing the first leg 1-0 away from home.
• Hakan Çalhanoğlu scored the only goal of the first leg in Germany on 25 February, giving Leverkusen their first round of 16 win at the seventh attempt. All six of their previous matches had ended in defeat, with the goal difference 5-22.
• Leverkusen, who qualified as Group D runners-up, have never won a last-16 tie and they will have to work hard to change that statistic against an Atlético side who finished as Group A winners ahead of Juventus.
Previous meetings
• The clubs played out two 1-1 draws when they met in the group stage of the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League. Simão's penalty (51) cancelled out an Eren Derdiyok goal (39) in Madrid on 30 September 2010, before substitute Fran Mérida's equaliser (73) negated Patrick Helmes' opener (69) in Leverkusen on 16 December.
• Jupp Heynckes' Leverkusen won the group, with Quique Sánchez Flores’s Atlético, then holders, eliminated after finishing third as a result of that matchday six draw in Germany.
• The lineups in Madrid were:
Atlético: De Gea, Ujfaluši, Álvaro Domínguez, Perea, Filipe Luís, Paulo Assunção, Raúl García (Mérida 46), Reyes, Simão, Forlán (Tiago 46), Costa.
Leverkusen: Adler, Schwaab, Friedrich, Hyypiä, Kadlec, Reinartz, Sam, Vidal (Bender 61), Balitsch (Rolfes 61), Barnetta, Derdiyok (Helmes 68).
Match background
Atlético
• Atlético are looking to reach the quarter-finals of the European Cup for the seventh time.
• The Rojiblancos are chasing a fourth straight home victory in this season's competition having won their three group games in Madrid with a 10-0 aggregate score.
• Atlético have won 20 of their last 22 European matches at the Vicente Calderón. The only defeat was a 2-0 reverse to FC Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 in February 2013.
• Gabi, Diego Godín, Juanfran, Koke, Mario Suárez, Miranda and Arda Turan all played when Atlético last hosted German opposition, beating Hannover 96 (2-1) in the quarter-finals of their triumphant 2011/12 UEFA Europa League campaign.
• Atlético's overall home record against Bundesliga clubs is W10 D2 L3.
• Los Colchoneros have won their last five two-legged ties against German sides, their last aggregate defeat coming against 1. FC Dynamo Dresden in the 1979/80 UEFA Cup first round.
• Atlético lost the 1974 European Champion Clubs' Cup final against FC Bayern München, going down 4-0 in a replay after a 1-1 draw.
• The Madrid club have won ten of the 19 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the away first leg, and it is a similar story when that first game ended 0-1: two aggregate Atlético wins, three defeats. The most recent example came against FC Schalke 04 in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, when the Spanish side were 4-0 home winners.
• Atlético's shoot-out record in UEFA competition is W0 L3:
6-7 v Derby County FC, 1974/75 UEFA Cup second round
1-3 v ACF Fiorentina, 1989/90 UEFA Cup first round
1-3 v Villarreal CF, 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup final
Leverkusen
• Roger Schmidt's side are hoping to put behind them a run of heavy defeats at this stage of the competition. Although they reached the 2002 final, losing to Real Madrid CF, that was when the tournament had a second group stage. Since the change of format they have lost all three round of 16 ties played:
2013/14 Paris Saint-Germain 1-6 agg
2011/12 FC Barcelona 2-10 agg
2004/05 Liverpool FC 2-6 agg
• Leverkusen's 7-1 loss at Barcelona in the 2011/12 round of 16 was their heaviest European defeat. Bernd Leno, Stefan Reinartz, Simon Rolfes, Lars Bender, Stefan Kiessling, Gonzalo Castro and Ömer Toprak all played.
• Leverkusen returned to Spain last term to beat Real Sociedad de Fútbol 1-0 in the group stage through a Toprak goal. Antoine Griezmann was in the beaten home side.
• The Bundesliga team's overall record in Spain is W3 D2 L9.
• Leverkusen have lost just one of four away matches in this season's competition, winning twice – at FC København (3-2) in the play-offs and FC Zenit (2-1) on matchday four.
• The German club have won all 11 UEFA competition ties in which they were victorious in the home first leg, including three where the initial score was 1-0.
• Leverkusen have lost their last four two-legged ties against Spanish opposition. Their last victory came against RCD Espanyol in the 1988 UEFA Cup final (3-3 agg, 3-2 pens). That remains their only previous shoot-out in UEFA competition.
