• Porto have been beaten only once in seven fixtures with Swiss sides, succumbing 3-0 at Grasshopper Club Zürich in their 1980/81 UEFA Cup second round second leg for a 3-2 aggregate reverse. They have won three of the other six matches.

• Julen Lopetegui's men finished top of Group H, thrashing FC BATE Borisov 6-0 and edging out Athletic Club 2-1 at home, where they also drew 1-1 with Shakhtar. They were 2-0 victors against LOSC Lille in Portugal in their play-off second leg.

• Porto are unbeaten in their last eight European home games, winning five and drawing three since a 1-0 loss to FC Zenit on matchday three last term. They were undefeated in this season's group with four wins and two draws and have lost just one of their last 15 European matches home and away, a 4-1 reverse in the second leg of last spring's UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla FC. • In their 19th UEFA Champions League campaign, Porto are contesting their seventh round of 16 tie since lifting the trophy in 2004. They have lost five of those six ties, making it through to the quarter-finals only once, in 2008/09, when they were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate by Manchester United FC.

• Porto have won all bar two of the nine ties in UEFA competition when they have drawn the first leg away from home. Their defeats came at the hands of FC Bayern München in the 1990/91 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-finals, (1-1 away, 0-2 home) and Manchester United FC in the 2008/09 quarter-finals (2-2 away, 0-1 home).

• The Swiss champions have scored in just four of their 11 fixtures against Liga sides. Their record in Portugal reads W0 D3 L2.

• Basel posted a 2-1 home success over Vitória SC in the third qualifying round of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League and were 3-0 winners against Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League group stage, Fabian Schär opening the scoring.

• They were the first goals Basel had registered against Sporting in the sixth match between the teams, Schär's strike coming after 473 blank minutes.

• The Rot-Blauen came second in Group B, 11 points behind Real Madrid CF who started the campaign by overpowering them 5-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Basel also fell 1-0 away to PFC Ludogorets Razgrad but the 1-1 matchday six draw at Liverpool FC secured their qualifying place.

• The St. Jakob-Park outfit are in the last 16 of the modern UEFA Champions League for the second time – and will want to forget their most recent experience, in 2011/12, when they crashed 7-0 at Bayern having won the home leg 1-0. They have reached the European Cup quarter-finals only once, in 1973/74, when they overcame Celtic FC 3-2 at home but were undone 4-2 away.

• Basel won their sole previous UEFA competition penalty shoot-out, 4-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur FC in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.

• During his playing days, Paulo Sousa faced Porto 12 times while with SL Benfica (seven matches), Sporting (four) and Panathinaikos FC (one), registering two victories, four draws and six defeats. He played in Panathinaikos's 0-0 draw with Porto in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League second group stage.

• Ricardo Quaresma and Walter Samuel were team-mates at Internazionale between 2008 and 2010.

• Samuel's Inter encountered Porto twice in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group phase, winning 2-1 at home after losing 2-0 in Portugal.

• Jackson suffered a groin injury against Braga and could be out of action for several weeks.

• Schär is available after serving a one-match ban. Marek Suchý is suspended having received his third yellow card of the campaign during the first leg. Mohamed Elneny, Fabian Frei, González, Samuel and Taulant Xhaka are all a booking away from a ban.

• Shkelzen Gashi took his league tally to 16 goals this season as Basel beat FC Thun 3-0 on Saturday, Marco Streller getting the other. Gashi, the 19-goal top scorer in Switzerland last season for Grasshopper Club Zürich, also found the net in Basel's 4-2 defeat at title rivals BSC Young Boys on 22 February and is the Super League's top scorer again.

• On 5 March Basel's 33-year-old captain Streller announced he will retire at the end of the season, despite extending his contract until 2016 in November.

• Basel bounced back from that Young Boys loss – their first domestic reverse since 4 October – with a 1-0 home victory against FC Vaduz on 28 February, Frei the match winner with his first league goal of the campaign.

• Making his first appearance for Basel since 26 November, Kakitani scored a hat-trick in Sousa's side's 6-1 success at FC Münsingen in the Swiss Cup quarter-finals on 4 March.
