Article body
FC Shakhtar Donetsk are on a high after scoring 12 goals in their last two UEFA Champions League fixtures and their focus is on trying to secure the second qualifying place in Group H as they host Athletic Club.
• The teams drew 0-0 on matchday one, which launched Athletic's second group stage campaign and their first since 1998/99.
Match background
Shakhtar
• Shakhtar followed up their record-breaking 7-0 win at FC BATE Borisov on matchday three with a 5-0 victory in the return. After his five-goal haul in the first match, Luiz Adriano scored a hat-trick in the home game.
• The Ukrainian champions were denied on matchday two by a FC Porto equaliser in the fourth minute of added time despite leading 2-0 in the 89th minute.
• On eight points, Shakhtar are two behind already-qualified Porto but can only be knocked out if they lose both remaining games and BATE pick up six points.
• It would be only the third time – all in the last five seasons – that Shakhtar have advanced to the knockout rounds.
• They have lost only three of their last 18 home games in the UEFA Champions League, winning nine.
• Shakhtar faced Spanish opposition in last season's group stage, beating Real Sociedad de Fútbol 4-0 in Donetsk with Douglas Costa scoring twice and Luiz Adriano and Alex Teixeira also on the mark. They had earlier won 2-0 in San Sebastian.
• However that 4-0 win was only their second success in eight games at home to Spanish opponents, the other a 2-0 defeat of FC Barcelona in the 2004/05 group stage. Their overall record against Liga clubs is W4 D5 L9.
• Shakhtar lost the 2009 UEFA Super Cup 1-0 against Barcelona in Monaco.
Athletic
• The Spanish side's 2-0 defeat at home to Porto on matchday four ended their hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds.
• Athletic lost 2-1 at BATE on matchday two and suffered a similar reverse at Porto in their next outing. On one point, they are two behind BATE; if the Belarusian side win on matchday five, the Spanish side must match their result to have any chance of claiming a UEFA Europa League place.
• The matchday one fixture was Athletic's first against opponents from Ukraine.
• In 1998/99, the last time Athletic were in the UEFA Champions League group stage, they finished in fourth place in their group on six points.
• A 3-1 home win over SSC Napoli in this season's play-offs, Aritz Aduriz scoring twice with Ibai Gómez adding a third, put the Basque club into the group stage with a 4-2 aggregate victory. Iker Muniain had opened the scoring in the first leg for Athletic.
Coach and player links
• Dmitro Chygrynsky joined Barcelona in 2009, playing in a 1-1 draw against Athletic at the Estadio de San Mamés, and again when Barça beat the same opponents 4-1 at the Camp Nou. He returned to Shakhtar the following year.
• Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Serhiy Kryvstov played in Ukraine's 3-0 group stage defeat against a Spain side including Muniain in the 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Mikel San José was on the Spain bench.
