Bottom of Group E, Manchester City FC need a positive result against FC Bayern München to revive their fading UEFA Champions League ambitions.

• Bayern are already assured of first place in the group. City will be eliminated if they lose while a draw will keep their hopes alive only if there is also a draw between PFC CSKA Mosvka and AS Roma in the group's other game.

• Only two teams have taken two points or fewer from their opening four group games and still managed to progress from this stage of the UEFA Champions League: FC Lokomotiv Moskva (2002/03, 1 point) and FC Porto (2004/05, 2 points).

• Bayern won 3-1 at City on 2 October last year. Manuel Pellegrini's men came from two goals down in the return in Munich to prevail 3-2, ending Bayern's UEFA Champions League record run of ten successive wins in the process.

• Josep Guardiola and Manuel Pellegrini met as coaches of Barcelona and Real Madrid CF in 2009/10, Barça winning both matches (1-0h, 2-0a) as they beat Madrid to the title by three points.

• With Villarreal in 2008/09, Pellegrini suffered a 2-1 home loss to Guardiola's Barcelona, but drew 3-3 away. With Málaga CF, the Chilean lost all four Liga games against Guardiola's Barça.

• Pellegrini's Málaga – featuring Willy Caballero and Martín Demichelis – lost 3-2 on aggregate to Mario Götze and Robert Lewandowski's Borussia Dortmund in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, conceding two added-time goals in the second leg in Germany.

• Stevan Jovetić was on target as City came from behind to beat Swansea City AFC 2-1 at home on Saturday. It was his third league goal of the campaign, already matching last season's return.

• Agüero has scored 11 goals in his last 11 outings for City. On 8 November his double earned the Citizens, who trailed twice, a 2-2 draw at Queens Park Rangers FC.

• David Silva has not played since picking up a knee injury in City's 2-0 League Cup loss to Newcastle United FC on 29 October.
