Galatasaray v Dortmund background

Galatasaray AŞ have ground to make up after taking just one point from their first two matches, but face another stiff test against Group D pacesetters Borussia Dortmund.

Previous meetings
• Galatasaray came out on top when the sides met in the fourth round of the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup, winning 2-0 away ahead of a 0-0 home draw.

In the Copenhagen final, Galatasaray beat Arsenal FC 4-1 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes, becoming the first Turkish team to win a UEFA competition.  

• The teams were also paired in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League group stage, Dortmund winning 1-0 in Istanbul and 4-1 at home.

• This is Galatasaray's 13th home meeting with Bundesliga opposition and they are seeking just their third victory, having won none of the last six (D4 L2). Their overall home record against German teams is W2 D8 L2.

• Their last home win was a 1-0 success against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup second round.

• The Süper Lig runners-up are in their 13th group stage campaign and their third in succession, having missed out in the five previous seasons.

• Cimbom have lost only three of their last 19 European home matches. 

• On matchday one Burak Yılmaz struck in added time to rescue a point at home to Anderlecht. Two weeks later they lost 4-1 at Arsenal, Burak on target again from the penalty spot.

Dortmund
• Winners in 1996/97 and runners-up two seasons ago, Dortmund are in their tenth group stage campaign.

• Last season they reached the quarter-finals, a 2-0 second-leg home win against Real Madrid CF not enough to overturn a 3-0 away defeat.

• They have lost just one of their last seven away games in the group stage, winning four.

• Dortmund beat Beşiktaş JK 3-1 on aggregate in the 1989/90 European Cup Winners' Cup first round.

• Dortmund beat Arsenal 2-0 on matchday one before a 3-0 win at Anderlecht, Ciro Immobile scoring in both matches.

• Five Galatasaray players were born in Germany: Hamit Altıntop (Gelsenkirchen), Hakan Balta (Berlin), Tarık Çamdal and Furkan Özçal (Munich) and Yasin Öztekin (Dortmund).

• There are three players in the Dortmund squad of Turkish descent: Nuri Şahin, İlkay Gündoğan and Burak Çamoğlu.

• Öztekin played for Dortmund's reserve side between 2006 and 2011 and worked under Jürgen Klopp. He made only one substitute appearance for the senior team, a 1-1 draw with Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 31 January 2009.

• Blerim Dzemaili and Felipe Melo are both a booking away from a suspension after picking up yellow cards on matchdays one and two.

• Wesley Sneijder scored after 88 and 91 minutes against Istanbul rivals Fenerbahçe SK, who had Bruno Alves dismissed early in the second half, as Galatasaray prevailed 2-1 at home on Saturday.

• Cesare Prandelli's men have won their last three Süper Lig fixtures.

• Galatasaray responded to their loss to Arsenal by defeating Kayseri Erciyesspor 2-1 away from home on 4 October.

• Burak has found the net in three of Cimbom's last four games.

Dortmund
• Gündoğan – who made his comeback from a long-term back injury in the Schwarzgelben's 3-2 friendly win against fourth-tier Viktoria Köln on 14 October – featured in his first Bundesliga match since the opening weekend of last season as Dortmund lost 2-1 at 1. FC Köln on Saturday.

• The defeat was the club's fifth in eight league fixtures this term – their worst start to a campaign since 2007/08.

• Marco Reus and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were among the scorers against Viktoria Köln on their return from respective ankle and foot injuries.

• Erik Durm sustained an injury in the warm-up on Saturday and was replaced in the starting XI by Reus.

• Dortmund followed up their matchday two triumph in Brussels with a 1-0 home loss to Hamburger SV on 4 October.

• Schmelzer broke a bone in his left hand against Hamburg and is expected to be sidelined for around four weeks, while Oliver Kirch has not played since sustaining a thigh injury on 19 August but is back in training.

• Jakub Błaszczykowski had also returned to training following a knee injury that has kept him out since January but suffered a thigh strain in September and was signed off for another four to six weeks.

• Łukasz Piszczek provided the assist for the first goal in Poland's 2-0 success against a Germany side containing Mats Hummels and Erik Durm in a UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier on 11 October.
