History on Bayern's side for Madrid turnaround

FC Bayern München host Real Madrid CF in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final looking to take the penultimate step towards retaining their European crown.

• Madrid, semi-final losers in each of the past three seasons, hold a 1-0 lead thanks to Karim Benzema's 19th-minute goal in the first leg and are looking to avenge their defeat at this stage by Bayern in 2011/12. Josep Guardiola, now Bayern's coach, oversaw FC Barcelona's semi-final victory over the Merengues in 2011.

• While Madrid are seeking a tenth European Cup after last lifting the trophy 12 years ago, Bayern, five-time winners, are seeking to become the first side to retain the trophy since AC Milan managed the feat in 1989 and 1990 with a team featuring Carlo Ancelotti, now Madrid coach.
