Dortmund hoping lightning strikes twice

Borussia Dortmund are hoping to repeat their success against Real Madrid CF in this season's group stage when the teams meet again in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

• Jürgen Klopp's team took four points off the Merengues – winning 2-1 at home – as they finished above them in Group D. They are now looking to complete a hat-trick of home victories against Spanish opponents in the 2012/13 competition, having beaten Málaga CF 3-2 in the quarter-finals.

• While Dortmund are eyeing a second European Cup final, Madrid are aiming for their 13th. They have suffered three semi-final defeats since last winning the trophy in 2002 but have got the better of Dortmund at this stage before.

Past meetings
• Madrid ended Dortmund's reign as European champions when the teams met in the 1997/98 semi-finals. Fernando Morientes and Christian Karembeu's first-leg goals in Madrid earned a 2-0 aggregate success for Jupp Heynckes' side, who went on to lift the trophy. Current Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc and youth team coordinator Lars Ricken featured in both matches for Nevio Scala's team.

• The full lineups for that second leg in Dortmund on 15 April 1998 were:

• Madrid overcame Dortmund in the 2002/03 second group stage, winning 2-1 at home on 19 February 2003 as Raúl González and Ronaldo overturned Jan Koller's goal. Six days later Koller struck again but Javier Portillo's added-time strike made it 1-1. Madrid eventually qualified in second place, one point clear of Dortmund.

• Sebastian Kehl and reserve goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller remain with Dortmund, and Iker Casillas with Madrid.

• In this season's group stage, Robert Lewandowski and Marcel Schmelzer scored either side of Cristiano Ronaldo's strike to earn Dortmund a 2-1 victory over Madrid on 24 October.

• Dortmund very nearly won the return in the Spanish capital a fortnight later. They led twice through Marco Reus and Álvaro Arbeloa's own goal, with Madrid replying through Pepe and Mesut Özil, the latter scoring in the 89th minute.

• Dortmund have the best home record of the four sides still standing in this season's competition, having won all five of the matches on their own turf with a combined score of 10-3.

• Madrid's 3-2 defeat at Galatasaray AŞ in the quarter-final second leg was their third loss in 17 UEFA Champions League away fixtures under José Mourinho (the other two came in Germany) – and they have scored in all of them.

• Madrid have prevailed just once in 24 previous visits to face German opposition, losing 17 times.

• The solitary victory was a 3-2 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2000/01 though they did lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup on German soil in 1958/59, beating French side Stade de Reims 2-0 at Stuttgart's Neckarstadion.

• Prior to this term's victories over Madrid and Málaga, Dortmund had waited almost two decades for a home win against Spanish opponents. That dated back five games, to the 1994/95 UEFA Cup third round when Ricken hit the decisive final goal in a 3-1 second-leg success over RC Deportivo La Coruña, securing a 3-2 aggregate triumph.

• Dortmund's home record against Liga clubs, including a draw with FC Barcelona in the 1998 UEFA Super Cup, is W5 D3 L2.

• Madrid's record in two-legged ties with German clubs in UEFA competition is W11 L7; Dortmund's record against Spanish sides is W4 L2.

• While this is Klopp's first UEFA Champions League semi-final, for Mourinho it is the seventh: his record is W2 L4. He has had some big matches against German clubs before, notably his 2010 final triumph against Bayern with Inter, though Madrid did lose to the same opponents in last season's last four. On the two occasions Mourinho's sides reached the final, they won the trophy.

• One of Madrid's greatest days came the first time they faced German opposition – the 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 European Champion Clubs' Cup final in Glasgow. They beat Leverkusen 2-1 in the same city to win their ninth European crown in 2002.

• The winners will face Bayern or Barcelona in the final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 25 May.

Team ties
• Nuri Şahin made ten appearances for Madrid in 2011/12 – four in the UEFA Champions League – after signing from Dortmund. He returned to BVB on a season-and-a-half loan in January, having spent the first half of this campaign loaned to Liverpool FC.

• Germany's Schmelzer, Mats Hummels, Mario Götze, İlkay Gündoğan, Sven Bender, Kevin Grosskreutz and Reus are international colleagues of Sami Khedira and Özil.

• All bar Bender and Grosskreutz featured in Germany's 3-1 friendly loss to Argentina in August. Khedira (own goal) and Ángel Di María were on the scoresheet and Gonzalo Higuaín also played. Higuaín struck the only goal in Argentina's 1-0 March 2010 win against Germany in Munich.

• Hummels played in Germany's 1-0 UEFA EURO 2012 group stage victory over a Portugal side featuring Pepe, Fábio Coentrão and Ronaldo.

• Neven Subotić was in the Serbia side beaten 2-0 by Luka Modrić's Croatia in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier in March. He suffered an identical defeat with Serbia against a Spain team including Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Raúl Albiol last May.

• Jakub Błaszczykowski and Lewandowski's Poland lost 6-0 to Spain in June 2010, Alonso scoring once.

• Özil played for Dortmund's local rivals FC Schalke 04 between 2006 and January 2008 before joining SV Werder Bremen. His only goal against Dortmund in seven appearances came in a 1-1 home draw in November 2009.

• Khedira won the 2006/07 Bundesliga title with VfB Stuttgart.
