Manchester City FC have their backs to the wall as they host FC Bayern München in their final Group A fixture.
• City slipped to third with their 2-1 defeat at SSC Napoli on 22 November and will only prolong their first UEFA Champions League campaign into the knockout stages if they beat Bayern and Napoli fail to win at Villarreal CF.
• For Bayern, 2-0 home winners against City in September – the only one of their 23 matches this season in which the English club failed to score – there are no such worries given their unassailable lead at the group summit.
Match background
• City can take heart from a 14-match unbeaten home record in Europe – their last reverse coming against FC Midtjylland in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup second qualifying round – although Bayern arrive with six wins from their last eight UEFA Champions League away games.
• City last hosted German opposition in April 2009 when beating Hamburger SV 2-1 in a UEFA Cup quarter-final they lost on away goals. Of their starting lineup, only Vincent Kompany, Nedum Onuoha, Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta are in City's UEFA Champions League squad; Jérôme Boateng and Ivica Olić featured for Hamburg.
• Earlier that season City beat an FC Schalke 04 side including Manuel Neuer and Rafinha 2-0 in the group stage.
• City's first home meeting with a Bundesliga club was a 5-1 defeat of Schalke that swept them into the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final.
• Bayern's last visit to England ended with elimination for their Mancunian hosts as goals by Olić and Arjen Robben brought them back from 3-0 down to 3-2 against Manchester United FC in the 2009/10 quarter-finals, securing a 4-4 aggregate draw and away-goals victory.
• Bayern's most recent win in England also came at United, a 1-0 UEFA Champions League quarter-final success in April 2001. They have lost on their last three visits and their overall record away to English teams is W2 D7 L5.
• Bayern lifted the European Champion Clubs' Cup with a 2-0 final triumph against Leeds United AFC in 1975, although they lost finals to Aston Villa FC (0-1, 1982) and Manchester United (1-2, 1999).
Team ties
• Roberto Mancini faced Bayern as FC Internazionale Milano coach in the 2006/07 group stage, finishing second behind them after a 2-0 home loss and 1-1 draw in Bavaria.
• Mancini scored for Italy against Germany in a 1-1 draw at the 1988 UEFA European Championship. For UC Sampdoria in the 1989/90 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round he struck in a 1-1 draw at Borussia Dortmund en route to a 3-1 aggregate victory, and the next season scored in a 2-1 aggregate first-round win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
• As a player, Jupp Heynckes was involved with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the European Cup's first penalty shoot-out against Everton FC in the 1970/71 second round. He converted his kick but Mönchengladbach lost.
• Heynckes suffered even greater heartache against Liverpool FC with defeats in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup final – despite his two second-leg goals – and the 1976/77 European Cup final. The next year he lost out to the Anfield club again in the European Cup semi-finals.
• Daniel Van Buyten made five league appearances for City on loan from Olympique de Marseille in 2003/04 while Boateng spent last season with City, making 16 top-flight outings.
• From 2006 to 2008 Boateng, Olić, Nigel de Jong and Vincent Kompany were team-mates at Hamburg.
• Kompany's Belgium's UEFA EURO 2012 play-off hopes were ended in October by a 3-1 defeat by a Germany side including Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller and Mario Gomez.
• Kompany was also part of the RSC Anderlecht side eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after a 1-0 defeat at Bayern in their final 2003/04 group stage fixture.
• Ribéry and Samir Nasri were colleagues at Marseille from 2005 to 2007 and play together for France.
• Boateng, Lahm, Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Müller and substitute Kroos all featured in Germany's 4-0 win against an Argentina side including Carlos Tévez and substitute Sergio Agüero in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.
• David Silva was part of the Spain selection that beat Bayern's Germany contingent in the UEFA EURO 2008 final and 2010 World Cup semi-finals.
