A 5-0 first-leg victory proved a sufficient buffer for Rosenborg BK to reach the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round despite coming unstuck in the return against Breidablik.

Goals in either half by Dylan McAllister and Kristinn Steindórsson earned the Icelandic team a deserved win, yet it is the visitors who can look forward to a meeting with FC Viktoria Plzeň following a 5-2 aggregate success.

In contrast to a week earlier in Norway, the sides were far more evenly matched second time around, even though Rosenborg almost went ahead in the first minute when a shot by Rade Prica was saved by Ingvar Thór Kale. The goalkeeper was also on hand to deny Jim Larsen after 13 minutes before the hosts came to life, Steindórsson forcing a save out of Daniel Örlund soon after.

The deadlock was broken on 28 minutes when Kristinn Jónsson put McAllister, who used to ply his trade in Norway, clear and the 29-year-old Australian kept his composure to score Breidablik's first goal in UEFA club competition. Jónsson might have scored himself before half-time only for Örlund to pull off another stop, while the lively McAllister fired over when well-placed.

There were chances for both sides in the second half, and although most fell Rosenborg's way, with half-time substitute Morten Moldskred and Trond Olsen squandering the best of them, it was Breidablik who would score again. McAllister turned provider, playing in Steindórsson to finish well from a tight angle with six minutes left. By now, however, it was clear which side was going through to face the Czech champions.
