Article body
The concluding night of first knockout round action got off to a record-breaking start as Roy Makaay scored the fastest goal in UEFA Champions League history for FC Bayern München against Real Madrid CF.
Early goals
Having lost the first leg in the Spanish capital 3-2, Bayern were determined to make a flying start in Germany. Makaay obliged in style, sweeping a Hasan Salihamidžić pass beyond Iker Casillas eleven seconds in after the Bosnian had dispossessed Roberto Carlos on Madrid's left flank. The Dutchman's goal eclipses the previous mark set by Gilberto 20.07 seconds into Arsenal FC's match against PSV Eindhoven on 25 September 2002. The Brazilian's strike had beaten Alessandro Del Piero's for Juventus against Manchester United FC in October 1997 by five-hundredths of a second.
