Sporting Clube de Portugal have unveiled Sweden midfielder Pontus Farnerud as their first signing for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League campaign.
'Good vision'
The 26-year-old arrives at the Lisbon outfit on a free transfer after being released from his contract with French side RC Strasbourg, following the club's relegation from Ligue 1. Upon agreeing his three-year deal, Farnerud described himself as a player with "good vision" who likes "to defend and attack". He added: "I'm very happy to have signed for a team that will take part in the Champions League and that has great working conditions."
International class
Capped nine times but omitted from Sweden's FIFA World Cup squad, Farnerud scored three goals in 32 games last term, having started his career at Landskrona BoIS. Ahead of the 1998/99 season, Farnerud joined AS Monaco FC, helping them to the French title in the following campaign, before moving to Strasbourg, initially on loan for 2003/04. He then made a permanent switch to La Meinau ahead of the 2005/06 season.
