Article summary
Udinese Calcio have signed 31-year-old Brazilian defender Teixeira Juarez on a free transfer from Bologna FC.
Article body
Stingy defence
The 31-year-old made 30 league appearances last season as Bologna went down despite boasting the fourth-meanest defence in Serie A, shipping just 36 goals in 38 games.
Journeyman Juarez
Udinese are Juarez's fifth Italian club, following spells at US Lecce, Como Calcio, AC Siena and Bologna. He has played 146 top-flight matches since making his debut with Lecce in 1999.
Krøldrup departure
Juarez is expected to fill an important role at the back, with Danish international Per Krøldrup having been sold to Everton FC. Udinese enter the Champions League in the third qualifying round.
Bologna hope
Bologna were condemned to Serie B after losing a relegation play-off to Parma FC, but have appealed for reinstatement. Torino Calcio and FC Messina Peloro have been provisionally excluded from Serie A due to financial problems, and Bologna are on standby to replace Messina.
