Lincoln 1-0 Celtic
Both Gibraltarian teams came through their respective first qualifying round ties last week, with Europa also progressing in their namesake competition, but perennial champions Lincoln raised the bar again tonight. Celtic had most of the play and twice hit the woodwork but the winner came on 48 minutes though Lee Casciaro, who also was the first to score a compeitive goal for Gibraltar away to Scotland last year. He will be back in Glasgow next Wednesday.
Valletta 1-2 Crvena zvezda
Celtic's fellow former European chamions Crevna zvezda only just avoided an upset of their own as they came from behind in Malta. Valletta led through Federico Falcone from the 15th to 66th minute, when Aleksandar Katai levelled. Predrag Sikimić, who had come on just before the equaliser, made it 2-1 with 15 minutes to go.
TNS 0-0 APOEL
Welsh champions TNS were perhaps inspired by their national team's exploits as they put on a stubborn display to keep out the 2011/12 quarter-finalists from Cyprus. The return in Nicosia is next Tuesday.
BATE Borisov 2-0 Seinäjoki
BATE have come through from the second qualifying round to the group stage four times in the last five seasons and goals from Yuri Kendysh and Vitali Rodionov has put them on course again. Competition debutants Seinäjoki will hope for better in Finland next Tuesday than on their continental bow last season, when they lost home and away against Iceland's FH in the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round.
Salzburg 1-0 Liepāja
Jonathan Soriano scored with just seven minutes left to ensure Salzburg's latest attempt to end a 22-year absence from the UEFA CHampions League group stage got off to a winning start. Still, it was a promising European debut for Latvia's Liepāja even if they only had four attempts to Salzburg's 19.
Hapoel Beer-Sheva 3-2 Sheriff
A last-minute penalty converted by substitute Maharan Radi gave Hapoel victory on their competition debut. Josip Ivančić put Sheriff ahead on 22 minutes and although Fidan Aliti was sent off shortly afterwards for his second bookable offence, Bozhidar Mitrev saved the resulting penalty from Maor Buzaglo. Still, John Ogu equalised before half-time and in the 52nd minute Hapoel had another spot-kick, captain Elyaniv Barda making no mistake having himself been fouled. Josip Brezovec equalised in the 64th minute for the ten men of Sheriff but they will have a deficit to overcome in Moldova next Tuesday.
Vardar 1-2 Dinamo Zagreb
Dinamo made the most of two goals in the opening half-hour to ensure they will defend a lead at home next Wednesday. Dinamo, have competed in the group stage last season and have done so in one or other of UEFA club competitions every season since 2007/08, went ahead through an own goal and Marko Rog, whose previous game was Croatia's 2-1 defeat of Spain at UEFA EURO 2016, doubled the lead. Hovhannes Hambartsumyan pulled one back for the Macedonian champions with 27 minutes to go.
Dinamo Tbilisi 2-0 Alashkert
The 1981 European Cup Winners' Cup winners have the advantage over their Armenian opponents after substitute Otar Kiteishvili broke the deadlock not long after his 49th-minute introduction and Giorgi Kvilitaia converted a penalty. Next Tuesday Alashkert will hope for a similar response as in the first qualifying round when they were held 0-0 at FC Santa Coloma but won 3-0 at home.
Zrinjski 1-1 Legia Warszawa
Legia led early in the second half in Mostar through Nemanja Nikolić, fresh from Hungary's UEFA EURO 2016 campaign, only for Matija Katanec to equalise eight minutes later and give Bosnian champions Zrinjski hope for next Tuesday's trip to Poland.
Qarabağ 2-0 Dudelange
The Azerbaijani champions are on course to get through this round for the third successive year as they take a two-goal lead to Luxembourg next Wednesday. Richard Almeida converted a tenth-minute penalty and added a second for Qarabağ just before the half-hour
