• Goalkeeper: Kevin Trapp (Paris)

A brilliant point-blank save from Chelsea's Diego Costa with the game goalless was just one of Trapp's contributions to Paris's 2-1 victory.

• Defender: Antonio Rüdiger (Roma)

Eventually Cristiano Ronaldo scored and Real Madrid won 2-0 at Roma but Rüdiger was tenacious in keeping the visitors out for so long.

• Defender: Gary Cahill (Chelsea)

John Terry and Kurt Zouma may have been injured yet Cahill was present and correct in Paris and ensured Chelsea stayed in the tie.

• Defender: Raphaël Varane (Real Madrid)

Madrid pulled away in the second half but before that Varane was crucial in ensuring Roma did not maximise their pressure with fine interceptions and blocks.

• Defender: Marcelo (Real Madrid)

Marcelo's pass set up Ronaldo's opener in Rome as he roamed freely up the left having only passed a late fitness test.

• Midfielder: Willian (Chelsea)

Willian has been a constant bright spark in a mixed season for Chelsea and once again he was their fulcrum in midfield.

• Midfielder: Renato Sanches (Benfica)

The teenager underlined his prodigious reputation with a dominant performance in the 1-0 success over Zenit – keeping Hulk, for one, subdued.

• Midfielder: Julian Draxler (Wolfsburg)

Draxler scored twice in the 3-2 triumph at Gent, both times with an almost unnatural calm. His general awareness and touch were excellent.

• Forward: Max Kruse (Wolfsburg)

Kruse got Wolfsburg's ultimately decisive third in Belgium with a neat volley having threatened throughout the night.

• Forward: Jonas (Benfica)

It seeemed Benfica's dominance against Zenit would come to nought but in added time the in-form Jonas headed the winner.

• Forward: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

After his record 11 goals in the group stage, it took 57 minutes for Ronaldo to open his knockout account in Rome with a fine display of pace, poise and power.
