Bayern v Barcelona: what to watch out for

Why are FC Barcelona taking nothing for granted ahead of their trip to FC Bayern München? How much will the first goal matter? UEFA.com's Graham Hunter has more.

If the post-match mood was any kind of guide, then FC Barcelona's players are 100% clear about how much work remains for them to do in Bavaria this week.

It wasn't just during their interviews but while they greeted well-known faces and queued to speak to the television presenters in the crowded 'Flash' zone that the victorious Barça stars showed absolutely no sign of either relaxation or, indeed, particular delight at their highly impressive 3-0 win against FC Bayern München.

Gerard Piqué, Marc-André ter Stegen, Javier Mascherano and Ivan Rakitić all took time to talk about the victory over Josep Guardiola's German champions. There was an air of relief, and natural tiredness, but also a grim determination that nobody should assume that the job was anything other than half done.

What a superb attitude to take to the Fußball Arena München, a place where they lost by four goals in their semi-final first leg two years ago and where Bayern thumped FC Porto 6-1 last month.

One thing that will not change – that will not even be contemplated as needing to change – is the idea of why Barcelona are in Munich. To win. However the scoreline ends up, Luis Enrique's team will be there to seek victory – not to speculate on a draw or to play defensively.

Messi: We got what we wanted

Ideally, the Barcelona coach would surely like to pick the same starting XI. It has become his staple choice for the biggest games when all 11 of them are fit and free of suspension.

The advantage of scoring not only an away goal but the first goal grows hugely in importance given Barcelona's record against Bayern in Germany, where they have lost two and drawn two.

Psychologically, the tie would look considerably more secure if the first scoreline adjustment were 4-0 with an away goal. Once again the occasion should be brimful of exceptional quality, technique and strategic niceties.
