FC Shakhtar Donetsk have filled the hole in their squad left by the departure of Fernandinho by signing Brazil and Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense defensive midfielder Fernando for €11m.
The 21-year-old, in his homeland preparing for the FIFA Confederations Cup, has agreed a five-year contract with the Ukrainian champions. He replaces compatriot Fernandinho, who a week ago completed a reported €40m switch to Manchester City FC.
"I'm sad to be leaving Grêmio and their fans, yet I'm happy that a good team will remain here and the infrastructure of the club is great as well," said Fernando, capped six times by the Seleção. "My future is with Shakhtar, who have big goals in the UEFA Champions League."
Fernando could make his debut for the Pitmen on 9 July against FC Chornomorets Odesa in the Ukrainian Super Cup. His arrival follows that of another Brazilian, 21-year-old striker Wellington Nem from Fluminense FC, last week.
