Bastian Schweinsteiger has extended his contract at FC Bayern München until 2016.
The German international confirmed news of his renewed terms following Bayern's 3-0 win against FC St Pauli at the Fußball Arena München on Saturday. "I have extended my contract and will stay with Bayern until 2016," said the 26-year-old midfielder, whose previous deal with the German titleholders was due to expire in 2012.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal was quick to herald the news. "I'm a coach with long-term goals," said the Dutchman. "Therefore the new contract for Bastian Schweinsteiger is very important. It's a very good sign that we managed to keep this world class player at our club."
Schweinsteiger, who has played 84 times for Germany, started his professional career at Bayern in 2002 and has since won five Bundesliga titles and five German Cups. Last season's UEFA Champions League runners-up will discover their round of 16 opponents at Friday's draw.
