FC Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernandinho is expected to be out of action for the remainder of the season after breaking his leg in Friday's 1-0 loss against FC Dynamo Kyiv.
The 25-year-old Brazilian was taken off midway through the first half in the Ukrainian Premier League fixture, with coach Mircea Lucescu saying afterwards: "Unfortunately Fernandinho is out for the whole season." A statement on the club's official website confirmed that grim prognosis, with Fernandinho booked in for ten weeks of treatment followed by a "difficult rehabilitation".
Fernandinho has scored 24 goals in 130 league games for Shakhtar since joining the club in 2005. The Ukrainian titleholders begin their UEFA Champions League Group H campaign at home against FK Partizan on Wednesday.
