Delighted to be through, Massimiliano Allegri said AC Milan must improve on the European stage after the 3-1 win at RSC Anderlecht, for whom defeat represented a "missed opportunity".

Qualification is just reward for the players, they fully deserve it. We achieved our first objective of the season with a match to spare, so the players did very well. We knew it would not be easy tonight and though we started well, we were in too much of a hurry searching for the final ball – we lacked a bit of accuracy.

We scored two goals but suddenly we stopped playing and they brought the game to life despite being down to ten men. Fortunately, we managed to score another in the end.

We have to improve, especially on the European stage, but we are playing with the right spirit. We have to remain calmer at times. For example, when we were 11 against ten, we should have kept our poise and waited for the right moment to hit again, not switch off like we did. It could have been very dangerous.

Philippe Mexès scored a great goal. I was expecting to see the ball sail wide and was surprised when I saw it in the back of the net. It was a great goal but also a great performance by Mexès.

John van den Brom, Anderlecht coach
We deserved more than to suffer defeat by AC Milan, but that doesn't help us one bit. I'm really disappointed by this missed opportunity. We played excellently in the first half and went into half-time with a good feeling, but then, immediately after the break, we conceded a goal due to a big man-marking mistake and we ended up with nothing.

Still, I'm very proud of the resilience that we showed despite the red card [for Bram Nuytinck] and being 2-0 behind. We have shown that we deserve our place in the Champions League and that we can compete at this level. Besides that, we still have something to fight for – a ticket to the Europa League. That is what we have to focus on now.
