• The left-back won a Romanian title with Steaua in 1985/86 and then domestic doubles in both subsequent campaigns, playing in their 4-0 1988/89 European Champion Clubs' Cup final defeat by AC Milan.
• After a season with Genoa, a good 1994 FIFA World Cup campaign saw him move from Italy to England, where he shone at Sheffield Wednesday prior to a five-season spell at Chelsea, who he joined in 1995.
• Petrescu's Stamford Bridge haul included an FA Cup and a League Cup as well as the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup; he named one of his three daughters Chelsea in the club's honour.
• Having played well into his 30s, the 95-times capped Petrescu had a brief spell as Rapid coach, led Bucharest neighbours Sportul Studenţesc for a while and finished second in Poland with Wisła in 2005/06.
• Hired by promoted Unirea in 2006, his side – who he nicknamed 'the Chelsea of Ialomita County' – were beaten Romanian Cup finalists in 2007/08 before romping to the 2008/09 title.
