Out of action
Nuno Gomes, whose nine league goals have helped Benfica claim second place in the Super Liga, will miss the club's three remaining matches, starting with Sunday's home game against Boavista FC.
Summer schedule
The operation will also force the 26-year-old out of Luiz Felipe Scolari's plans for Portugal's two summer friendlies. Scolari's team will face the United States in Boston on 5 June before taking on as yet unnamed opponents at home five days later.
European qualification
Nuno Gomes, who previously played for Boavista FC and AC Fiorentina, has made 31 international appearances, scoring 14 goals. By finishing runners-up behind FC Porto in the Super Liga, Benfica will enter next season's UEFA Champions League at the third qualifying round.
