Article body
Top stars
The game will feature a host of the planet's top players, who are joining forces with the world and European football authorities in an impressive show of solidarity for those who suffered the effects of the tsunami at Christmas. FC Barcelona are providing their stadium and facilities free of charge for the match which starts at 21.00CET.
Massive response
The football world has responded in impressive fashion to the relief aid effort. FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have opened a solidarity fund, and UEFA has contributed €1.5m - half of the amount to the solidarity fund and the other half to its charity partner, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to assist and support child victims.
Two teams
The stars will line up in two teams - one led by Barcelona's Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho, the other by AC Milan and Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko. Italy coach Marcello Lippi and Arsenal FC's Arsène Wenger will take charge of Shevchenko's side, which will include Italian legend Paolo Maldini, England captain David Beckham, French pair Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane, Spanish forward Raúl González and Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved.
Brazilian influence
Brazilian aces Ronaldo, Cafu, Juninho Pernambucano and Kaká, together with African talents Samuel Eto'o and Obafemi Martins and a host of names from South America and Asia will feature in Ronaldinho's selection. In charge of this group will be Brazil's 1994 FIFA World Cup-winning coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and Barcelona trainer Frank Rijkaard.
Olsson's gratitude
"We're very grateful to the players," said UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson, "as well as to the club and city in Barcelona for the help that is being given. When a disaster of this magnitude happens, everybody is prepared to give a hand.
Good initiative
"The disaster was terrible, and we think that it was a very good initiative by FIFA and AFC to open their solidarity fund, so we were happy to make a contribution. We also have a long-standing relationship with the ICRC, and we decided to help them to give specific help to children, as the ICRC is also working on behalf of children in conflicts in the area concerned."
