Dynamo crowned
Ukrainian giants FC Dynamo Kyiv were the final club to be crowned 2003/04 champions in Europe and will take their place in the third qualifying round, while runners-up FC Shakhtar Donetsk will start the competition in the second qualifying round. The draw for the first and second qualifying rounds will be held on 26 June with the third qualifying round draw following on 30 July.
Fenerbahçe joy
Turkish title holders Fenerbahçe SK start in the group stage after FC Porto's success in the 2003/04 competition. The Turkish Superleague champions were originally due to enter in the third qualifying round but because Porto qualify as the title-holders rather than by virtue of their domestic triumph, Portugal's place in the group stage passes to Turkey. Portuguese runners-up SL Benfica will remain in the third qualifying round.
Lineup complete
The 14 other teams in the group stage are: Valencia CF, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, AS Roma, Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, SV Werder Bremen, FC Bayern München, Olympique Lyonnais, Paris Saint-Germain FC, Panathinaikos FC, Olympiacos CFP, AFC Ajax and Celtic FC. It means that the 1999 winners Manchester United FC, the 2002 champions Real Madrid CF, the 2003 runners-up Juventus FC and the 2004 finalists AS Monaco FC will all have to go through the third qualifying round.
New system
The 2004/05 season will see the start of UEFA's club licensing system. In order for a club to be admitted to any of the UEFA club competitions, minimum standards in areas including sporting matters, infrastructure, personnel and administration, legal matters and financial matters must be fulfilled.
