FC Bayern München confirmed the rise of the West German game with a tense single-goal success over Rangers FC which dashed hopes of a historic Glasgow double. Arch-rivals Celtic FC had won the European Champion Clubs' Cup six days before the final in Nuremberg – a venue where FC Bayern made full use of ‘home’ advantage.

Close call
FC Bayern, coached by Zlatko Cajkovski, nicknamed 'Tschik', managed single-goal aggregate wins against TJ Tatran Presov, Shamrock Rovers FC and SK Rapid Wien before a conclusive 5-1 win over R. Standard de Liège in the semi-finals. Rangers FC, after eliminating the defending champions, Borussia Dortmund, more comfortably than the 2-1 second-round aggregate scoreline suggests, had a close call in the quarter-finals. However, they called correctly and beat Spanish side Real Zaragoza on the toss of a coin. They had fewer problems with Bulgarian side FC Slavia Sofia in the semi-finals.

Late, late winner
Although thousands of Scots travelled to Nuremberg, most of the 70,000 crowd was rooting for the Bayern side which contained Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller. They were frustrated during a first half dominated by Rangers and, even though Bayern gained the upper hand after the interval, neither team was able to break the deadlock. FC Bayern finally sent the German fans into raptures three minutes into the second half of extra-time, when Franz 'Bulle' Roth struck the winning goal. It was the first European trophy for the Munich club – but not the last.
